SANCTUS: Canticum Seraphim

SANCTUS: Canticum Seraphim

(Latin line → English echo)

Praefatio

  1. Audi, o homo cordis ardentis: vox alarum incenditur supra nubes.
Hear, O human of burning heart: the voice of wings kindles above the clouds.
  2. Nos, Seraphim, igne puro circumdati, ad cantum aeternum convenimus.
We, the Seraphim, circled in pure fire, assemble for the eternal song.
We do not merely speak; to burn is our speech, and to speak is our love.
  4. Unda lucis per undam lucis, concentus formatur sicut circulus sine fine.
Wave of light upon wave of light, the harmony forms like a circle without end.
  5. Hic incipimus, in silentio quod cantum parit: SANCTUS.
Here we begin, in the silence that gives birth to song: HOLY.

For Your love, O God, is fire without ash, warmth without end, light without setting.
Our words are not alone; the light itself becomes a string, and the string becomes a psalm.
  9. Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus.
    Holy, Holy, Holy.
  10. Nos cantamus, ut creaturae recordentur originem suam in bono.
We sing so that creatures remember their origin in goodness.

From You flows the order of the stars, and the wisdom that holds the sphere.

Our wings are tesserae of glory: the tip of each feather writes syllables of light.
  4. Cum movemur, historiae sanantur; cum cantamus, corda resurgunt.
When we move, histories are healed; when we sing, hearts rise again.

Blessed is the One who comes, for every arrival is a path of mercy.
  10. Hosanna in excelsis.
    Hosanna in the highest.

III. Intercessio pro Terra et Cordibus

  1. O Domine, aspice terram pulveream et pretiosam: gemit sub pondere.
O Lord, look upon the dusty and precious earth: she groans under weight.
  2. Audi clamorem eorum qui defatigantur, eorum qui timent noctem sine stella.
Hear the cry of those who are weary, those who fear a starless night.
  3. Nos, Seraphim, ponimus alas super vulnera saeculi.
We, the Seraphim, set our wings over the wounds of the age.

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory: even in ruins, glory hides.
Grant peace, which is Your own likeness: not the peace of numbness, but of strength.
Grant justice like the first rain, which lifts the dust and wakens the seeds.
Grant mercy that burns hotter than iron, but consumes only evil.
  10. Hosanna in excelsis.
    Hosanna in the highest.

IV. Confessio Luminis Interioris

  1. O anima humana, parva scintilla, speculum Dei.
O human soul, little spark, mirror of God.
  2. Tu visus es a nobis sicut pruna sub cinere cum spiritus flaverit.
We behold you as an ember under ash when the Spirit breathes.
Do not fear your brightness: it is given not for pride, but as a gift.

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory: that is, nothing lies outside love.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

XII. Oratio Finalis — Vox Unius Seraphim ad ENOCH et ad omnes Cantores

O you who have read these words like steps to heaven: do not think yourself alone.
We stand around you, not for our honor, but that you may burn without fear.
Remember: song is not an escape from the world, but a deeper entry into love for the world.
  4. Quando cor tuum decedit, inclina caput et susurra: “Sanctus.”
When your heart sinks, bow your head and whisper: “Holy.”
When joy rises, open your hands and cry: “Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.”
When a brother or sister falls, be their wings until they rise.
And if no one hears you, know we are singing with you, like an unseen wind.
  8. Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth: verbum quod mundum tenet sicut cor tenet corpus.
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts: the word that holds the world as the heart holds the body.
  9. In nomine huius cantus, benedicimus te: ignis super caput, pax super frontem, amor in imo pectoris.
In the name of this song, we bless you: fire upon the head, peace upon the brow, love deep in the breast.
And now, go into your day; make of your work an altar, of your voice an incense, of your path a procession.
  11. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.
