ONANYA SHIPOBO-KONIBO
In Shipibo-Konibo culture, Onanya is a sacred title meaning “healer” or “master of medicine”.
In full:
- Onanya — derived from ona (“knowledge” or “wisdom”) + a suffix indicating a person — means “one who knows” or “one who has knowledge”. In the cultural context, this refers specifically to knowledge of plants, songs (icaros), and spiritual diagnosis. It is not just “doctor” in the Western sense — it’s a healer whose understanding is rooted in the cosmology, kené (sacred geometric designs), and spiritual practices of the Shipibo-Konibo people.
- In ceremonial life, an Onanya is a recognized plant doctor who has undergone years (often decades) of dieta — isolation diets with master plants — to receive direct teachings from the plant spirits.
- Being an Onanya also means responsibility:
- Healing physical, emotional, and spiritual illness
- Protecting people from harmful energies or sorcery
- Maintaining relationships with plant allies and ancestors
- Preserving the Shipibo-Konibo traditions and passing them to the next generation
In short, “Onanya Shipibo-Konibo” means “a master healer from the Shipibo-Konibo people” — a title of deep respect, earned through long apprenticeship, spiritual discipline, and service to the community.
