3D Mandelbulbs and the Buddha ππ§♂️
πΉ What are 3D Mandelbulbs?
A Mandelbulb is a 3D fractal, basically an extension of the famous Mandelbrot set, which is a 2D fractal discovered by Benoit Mandelbrot in the 1980s. The Mandelbrot set is an infinite mathematical shape — you can zoom in forever and keep discovering new detail.
In 2009, Daniel White and Paul Nylander figured out a way to extend this idea into 3D — resulting in the Mandelbulb. It’s not an exact 3D Mandelbrot set (because there’s no true 3D equivalent), but it’s a mind-bending mathematical sculpture: bulbous, recursive, infinitely detailed, often looking like alien coral, psychedelic palaces, or organic temples.
πΉ So, what does that have to do with the Buddha?
Fractals like the Mandelbulb are powerful visual metaphors for Buddhist ideas:
1️⃣ Infinite Complexity, Emptiness, and Interdependence
- Fractals show how infinite detail can arise from simple equations.
- In Mahayana Buddhism, reality is described as ΕΕ«nyatΔ (emptiness) — not nihilism, but the idea that everything exists only in dependence on everything else, in endless interconnection.
- Mandelbulbs visually echo this: they look solid, but they’re pure math — forms arising from emptiness.
2️⃣ Self-Similarity and Samsara
- Fractals repeat endlessly at every scale — just as Buddhist thought describes cyclic existence (samsara) and the endless arising and passing away of forms.
- Observing a Mandelbulb can feel like a meditation on impermanence and infinite cycles.
3️⃣ The Infinite Mind
- Some modern Buddhists and visionary artists use Mandelbulbs in art to symbolize the awakened mind — vast, boundless, impossible to fully grasp.
- The fractal can be seen as a digital mandala — a sacred geometric representation of the cosmos and mind.
✨ Bottom line:
A 3D Mandelbulb isn’t directly “Buddhist,” but it resonates deeply with Buddhist insights about interdependence, emptiness, boundlessness, and the fractal nature of reality. Many modern spiritual artists use Mandelbulbs to visualize mystical states or the Buddha-mind: a glimpse of infinity made visible.
